Everton vs Chelsea predictions

Chelsea head into this fixture seven places above Everton in the Premier League table. However, these two teams are much more evenly matched than that fact would suggest.

In fact, Everton would be above Chelsea in the standings were it not for the 10-point penalty they were handed last month after being found guilty of breaching English football’s financial rules.

That is testament to the excellent job Sean Dyche is doing at Goodison Park. Everton only narrowly avoided relegation in 2021/22 and 2022/23.

Their aforementioned punishment means they could still be demoted this term, but if we only look at on-field matters, Everton are exceeding everyone’s expectations.

Without the penalty they would only be six points behind Newcastle United, the team they brushed aside in a 3-0 victory on Thursday night.

This is no fluke either. The underlying statistics prove that Everton have - broadly speaking - played well so far this campaign.

If we look at expected goals difference, which quantifies the quality of chances a team creates and concedes, Everton have the eighth-best record.

They sit above the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion in that particular table (although Chelsea are one place above Dyche’s side).

The Blues will not expect an easy encounter on Sunday, then. Everton are full of confidence and the whole club is united around the team in a way that was not always the case at this stage of previous seasons.

A manager of Dyche’s experience knows that Everton are not out of the woods yet, but he will be delighted with what he has seen from his players in the first 15 rounds of fixtures in 2023/24.

📝 Everton vs Chelsea betting tips

Everton brushed Newcastle United aside in midweek and their confidence will be high ahead of Chelsea’s visit to Merseyside.

Everton to win - 21/10 (bet365)

It is hard to know what you are going to get with this Chelsea team.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men began the season with a run of one win in six games. They then suffered just one defeat in their next six, beating Tottenham Hotspur and drawing with Arsenal and Manchester City.

In recent weeks there has not been such a clear pattern to their results. They have not repeated an outcome - win, draw or loss - since early October. Their last eight matches produced the following sequence: win, draw, loss, win, draw, loss, win, loss.

Judging by the above, Chelsea are due a draw this weekend. But from a betting perspective, the smart money is on Everton.

The Toffees are exactly the sort of team that can have success against Pochettino’s side, which is the youngest in the Premier League.

Dyche is not overly concerned with possession, so Chelsea will be permitted plenty of the ball. But the Blues often struggle to break down low blocks, while their profligacy was on display once again in a 2-1 defeat by Manchester United in midweek.

With a strategy based on getting the ball forward quickly and flinging crosses into the box, Everton can pick up another much-needed victory when Chelsea come to town.

Tip Everton to come out on top at 21/10 with bet365

Over 2.5 goals - 4/5 (bet365)

There is a perception of Dyche as an old-fashioned, defence-first manager. There is an element of truth to that image, of course, but Everton have hardly been employing overly cautious tactics so far this season.

Everton do not rank particularly highly for goals scored, but that is primarily due to problems of conversion rather than creation.

Again, a glance at the expected goals statistics is instructive. Everton rank a healthy 10th for chances created and joint-sixth for shots per game. This is not a team that simply sits back and hopes for the best.

Everton can play when they want to too: Beto’s goal against Newcastle on Thursday came at the end of a 30-pass move.

Meanwhile Chelsea’s recent matches have produced plenty of entertainment for the neutrals. Their last five games averaged a remarkable 5.2 goals.

In that light, the odds on there being over 2.5 at Goodison Park look very appealing indeed.

Go for over 2.5 goals at 4/5 with bet365

Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score any time - 12/5 (bet365)

Earlier this season, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was seen criticising his own supporters after a negative reaction from the Everton crowd when he was taken off against Sheffield United.

Those fans were frustrated with Calvert-Lewin’s injury record, but the England international has thankfully managed to remain fit for the most part in recent weeks.

He did miss the victory over Nottingham Forest last weekend, but Calvert-Lewin was back in the starting XI against Newcastle.

He did not get on the scoresheet but had plenty of chances to find the net. At his best Calvert-Lewin is a real thorn in the side of opposition defences and Chelsea will have their hands full as they attempt to deal with him.

We like the look of him in the anytime scorer market this weekend.

Back Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score at 12/5 with bet365
